As Turkey’s mining reserves are diverse but limited in volume, the strategy adopted by Cengiz Holding is to use them in the most effective way possible, maximizing recovery and producing products with high added value. The Group first acquired Eti Bakır A.Ş. Küre facilities and Eti Bakır A.Ş. Samsun facilities within the scope of privatization in 2004. This was followed by the acquisition of the Murgul Plant in 2006 and the Halıköy Plant in 2007. Annual production, which was 32,000 tons before privatization, increased to 75,000 tons as a result of investment and the implementation of automation systems. In the nine years following privatization, the Küre and Murgul mines were fully renovated by Cengiz Holding with a massive investment of USD 285 million. Investments of USD 350 million are ongoing.
Turkey's Largest Mining and Metallurgy Operation
While continuing to invest in more efficient production, Eti Bakır A.Ş. drilling operations for new ore reached 546,400 m as of the end of 2013 and R&D investments grew to USD 50 million, making a total of over USD 60 million of investment when added to the cost of other technology work. Eti Bakır A.Ş. was number 254 in the Top 500 Industrial Institutions in Turkey list, compiled by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry in 2016, and is number 61 in the list of the largest tax contributors in the country. It is the 10th most profitable company in the ISO Top 500 Industrial Institutions list and the second best company in terms of export growth as listed in the Capital Magazine 500 List in 2014. Eti Bakır A.Ş. directly employs 2,500 people at its Samsun, Küre, Murgul, Halıköy and Espiye plants, making a total of 10,000 jobs when added to the number of employment opportunities created indirectly.
Etİ Bakır A.Ş. Samsun Plant
The Only Smelting Plant in Turkey Capable of Producing Cathode Copper from Ore
Production at the Eti Bakır A.Ş. Samsun Plant achieves a purity level of 99.99%. The electrolysis facility, which covers an indoor space of 10,000 m2 and has 440 production pools, is the largest copper electrolysis facility in Turkey and harnesses the latest technologies to produce 75,000 tons of cathode copper annually. The cathode copper produced is certified to “LME Grade A” specifications. The Samsun Plant includes a smelting and anode casting facility, sulfuric acid facility, concentrator facility, electrolysis/cathode copper facility, ammonium sulfate facility and a laboratory.
Plant Production Capacity
Concentrated Copper Processing 400.000 tons/year
Blister Copper Production 75.000 tons/year
Anode Copper Production 75.000 tons/year
Cathode Copper Production 75.000 tons/year
Etİ Bakır A.Ş. Küre Plant
Before privatization, mining and production operations at the Eti Bakır A.Ş. Küre Plant were limited to a depth of 140 m. Following the acquisition of the plant by Cengiz Holding, exploration showed new reserves below 140 meters and a new underground system descending to 960 meters was established. New tunnels with a length of 40 km and wide enough to traverse with subterranean vehicles were also excavated. Today, the Eti Bakır A.Ş. Küre plant produces 1,000,000 tons of Raw Copper Ore, 90,000 tons of Copper Concentrate and 400,000 tons of Pyrite Concentrate every year through underground mining. It is planned that the copper produced at Küre will meet 8 to 9% of national demand. Together with the Murgul plant, this will meet 15% of the national demand.
Etİ Bakır A.Ş. Murgul Plant
The Eti Bakır A.Ş. Murgul Plant in Artvin was acquired by Cengiz Holding in 2006. The open mine sites at the Eti Bakır A.Ş. Murgul Plant produce 3,200,000 tons of run-of-mine copper ore and 95,000 tons of copper concentrate every year. Power generation at the 25 MW Hydroelectric Power Plant is certified by the proper production license and there is ongoing work on modernization, increasing capacity and detecting new reserves. Copper ore from Murgul is converted to copper concentrate and sent as pulp to the filtering and dehumidification facility in Hopa through 2 pipelines. After filtration and dehumidification processes have taken place, it is taken to the storage area and transported on from Hopa Port.
Etİ Bakır A.Ş. Mazıdağı Phosphate Plant
Mazıdağı Phosphate Plant in Mardin is to commence service as a fertilizer plant in 2018 with an investment of USD 1.1 billion.
The Eti Bakır A.Ş. Mazıdağı Phosphate Plant in Mardin was taken over by Cengiz Holding in 2011 and the annual phosphate rock production capacity of the plant exceeds 550,000 tons. The new fertilizer plant is expected to be the biggest private sector investment in Eastern and South Eastern Anatolian Regions. The Mazıdağı Fertilizer plant will generate all the power it needs and it is anticipated that 85% of its raw material requirement will be met from within Turkey. The plant’s initial share of the fertilizer market will be 20%. The Mazıdağı Phosphate and Fertilizer Plant, which will be the only fertilizer plant in the region, will have an annual production of 750,000 tons of fertilizer, 200,000 tons of DAP and 550,000 tons of NP, meeting the entire fertilizer requirements of the Harran Plain.
